Please be courteous and civil in all correspondence.
Points you could make and questions you could ask:
- The boatyard provides vital maintenance for boats where there are no alternative facilities;
- it is the centre of a thriving community.
- it has a strong historical connection to the area.
- it has the support of local residents and the city council.
- Why did BW evict the boaters when negotiations for an alternative yard were coming to a resolution
thus wasting taxpayers and licence feepayers money ?
- How much damage is this doing to BW's image ?
- With all the PR BW are producing about putting freight back on the canals how can he justify the current trend of
selling off (and not replacing) wharves and boatyards ?
- BW are the custodians of our canal system, does he think it appropriate to pillage our heritage ?
- How much has the eviction and security of the site cost ?
What you could ask British Waterways to do:
- Comply with the Planning Inspector's decision to provide alternative boatyard facilities in the immediate area.
- In the long term, live up to their own PR statements, and listen to what local communities and waterways users are saying - and incorporate a working wharf into any new development of this historic site.
- live up to their statutory duty (of the 1968 transport act) of protecting wharves and boatyards
You could also get in contact with Mr Eugene Baston, BW's external relations.
